When you have several rooms filled with clutter, cleaning things up can seem like a daunting task. Break the job into several small steps to avoid getting overwhelmed.
Start by preparing for your cleaning project, instead of just diving into it. Ask yourself: Where will I put things that I remove from the clutter? How can I avoid misplacing things that I want to keep?
Get several different storage containers from your local grocery store, so you will able to clear out the room and categorize things as you work. Buy some large, lined garbage bags and also ask the store for their unneeded cardboard boxes. Use the garbage bags for the junk you want to throw away and store valuable or useful things in the boxes.
However, don’t lump together things that you actually want to use and things can probably be reused (by someone else). Write “keep”, “sell”, or “charity” on each of the boxes to further classify your useful belongings.
When you are ready to begin working, put a time limit on your cleaning session. Decide how much you can realistically accomplish within the allotted time and set a timer to stay on track. When the timer goes off, stop and pick up any debris from cleaning. Then, take a 15-minute break before you start cleaning again, so you don’t burn out.
As you are working, remember to just clean one room at a time. Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
Follow these guidelines as you sort through clutter: In each room, have a garbage bag on hand for junk and separate things that belong in the labeled boxes into three piles on the floor. When you are finished with all the rooms, add the things you want to keep, sell or donate to their respective boxes. Give the “keep box” a second look and see if you can afford to donate more to charity. If there’s something in your “keep box” that hasn’t been used in a more than a year, move it to another box or throw it away.
Sort through your “sell box” and price things for a future garage sale. Choose an early date for the garage sale, so you won’t be tempted to move the items back onto shelves in your home.
Put your filled garbage bags by the curb on the next pick-up day.
Call local organizations that work with the less fortunate and find out where you can drop off your “charity box”.
